From Renaissance up to the end of XVIth century, Europeans only possessed
knowledge about the coasts of Africa, along which they had established settlements.
At the turn of the XIXth century, the interior of Africa brought about a great burst of interest. Throughout the century, Africa was at the center of a huge movement of discovery, exploration and inventory : in this process, mapping highly contributed to the intellectual, scientific and political appropriation of the territory. In the framework of “Estivales africaines” at the BNF, a display of documents on the theme of exploration and cartography of Africa will be organized in three parts : knowledge of the outlines of Africa through 12 continental maps (allée Julien Caïn) ; knowledge of inner Africa through maps, sketches, drawings and photographies brought by explorers (Abécédaire des collections) ; digitized and interactive 1:2 000 000 map of Africa in 63 sheets (Labo).
